I Had Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins Left Out
(Or Should I Say Left Behind?)
By Ica Ducanes
LaHaye and Jenkins’ Left Behind series have sold more than 60 million copies worldwide. It has spun 13 other books and three prequels as well. LaHaye was the brainchild and did notes for the Left Behind series and Jerry B. Jenkins did the actual writing. Many question the validity of the two writers of the Left Behind series. Do they know what they are talking about? Or are they just apocalyptic fan fiction authors? Who really are Time Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins?
Tim LaHaye is the author of more than 50 books on subjects such as family life, temperaments, Bible prophesy, the will of God, Jesus Christ, and secular humanism with over 13 million in print, some of which have been translated into 32 foreign languages. His writings are best noted for their easy-to-understand and scripturally based application of biblical principles that assist in facing and handling the challenges of life. It’s not just in his writings that he has helped in changing lives for self improvement. He likewise designed the LaHaye Temperament Analysis that over 30,000 people use.
Jerry Jenkins, on the other hand, has written more than 170 books and has works in Time, Reader's Digest, Parade, Guideposts, and dozens of Christian periodicals. He also owns a filmmaking company in Los Angeles called, Jenkins Entertainment, which produced the critically-acclaimed movie Hometown Legend, based on his book of the same name. Christian Writers Guild, which has 2,000 members and aims to train professional Christian writers of tomorrow, is owned by Dr. Jenkins as well.
Newsweek magazine’s May 24, 2004 cover story was entitled, “The New Prophets of Revelation”, featuring both Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins.
They’ve had their fair share of criticisms, though. There are some who question the pair’s apocalyptic beliefs in their Left Behind series, where they claim that the end is near. As Christians, we believe that Christ will be coming back any time. I think that both LaHaye and Jenkins merely presented us a picture of what they think might happen in the rapture when the Son comes back.
Their series open our eyes and remind us to be ready for that day when we meet our Savior, Jesus Christ. After all, we wouldn’t want to be left behind now, do we?
